Ready For First Foods

This is not a sponsored post.  We purchased all of these items ourselves and simply want to share our opinions. Thank you for joining us!

When you make your own baby food, you know exactly what your baby is eating because you choose the ingredients.  There is no chance of preservatives, fillers, or artificial ingredients.  You also save money and the environment by not buying and discarding baby food jars and containers.

Making baby food is so easy and you don't need anything that you don't most likely already have.  You have to steam or boil the food which can be done in a microwave or on the stove, you need a blender or food processor for blending the food, and you need a way to freeze the food if you make large batches of it (ice cube trays work for that).

However, if you want to make the process super quick and simple, I recommend the Beaba Babycook Baby Food Maker.

I am in love with the Beaba Babycook!  It's a small appliance about the size of a two-slice toaster.  You put a measured amount of water in the reservoir (on the left), put fresh or frozen food in the steamer basket inside the cup, lock everything into place, and turn it on.  The Beaba will steam the food perfectly and will shut off when it's finished.  Steaming food doesn't get any easier than that.

When the steaming process is complete, lift out the basket and save the remaining water to use for blending.  Put the steamed food into the blender cup, add some of the water saved from steaming, and blend it into a puree.  I got perfect creamy smooth puree each time.  All of the steaming and blending is done in this one device so there is very little cleanup involved as compared to using other baby food preparation methods.

There are many foods I will buy fresh but there are some foods that are so much easier to buy frozen.  When there are organic frozen foods available, I think it's worth using them to save on prep time.  Especially for things like butternut squash which are a pain to cut up yourself.

You can use ice cube trays for freezing baby food.  However, there are better alternatives available such as the Mumi&Bubi Compact Baby Food Freezer Storage Trays.  This is a pack of two trays with lids that each hold 21 perfect 1oz portions of baby food.  The lids protect the food while it's freezing and allow the trays to stack neatly.  The portion slots are rounded on the bottom so that the frozen food is easy to remove.

Once the portions are frozen, run the bottom of the trays under warm water for a few seconds, and then simply push the portions out.  I put the frozen portions into a freezer bag for storage until use.  The trays are top-rack dishwasher safe.

I'm already formulating ideas in my head for using the Beaba and Mumi&Bubi trays for things other than baby food... can you imagine blended fruit frozen into 1oz portions to use in smoothies, or frozen portions of sauces or herbs to quickly add in when cooking?!  So many possibilities :)

I also have the Baby Bullet Complete Baby Care System but only because I bought it from a neighbor friend at an unrefusable price.  The Bullet comes with two blades, two cups for blending, a silicone freezer tray, and six storage cups.

I admit, I do really like the milling blade.  This blade allows you to turn grains and rice into a fine powder to prepare by itself or to combine with any fruit and veggie puree.  You know that homemade baby rice or oatmeal cereal is a great thing if you've ever looked at the list of ingredients on the average store-bought box.

However, the average food processor will also turn grains and rice into a fine powder.  If you have a food processor or a really powerful blender then the Baby Bullet really is not worth buying.

I blended up some avocado puree (avocado and water) in the Baby Bullet while food was steaming in the Beaba.  The end result was a smooth and creamy puree although I had to shake the cup a few times to ensure that all the pieces made contact with the blade.

The one thing actually love about the Baby Bullet is the manual/cookbook that comes with it!  It contains some great recipes, feeding charts and schedules, and baby food making tips.

The Baby Bullet claims that you can "Make an entire week's worth of all natural baby food in less than 5 minutes!". The blending time certainly takes less than 5 minutes, but that obviously does not include cook time.  The instructions tell you that in addition to the Baby Bullet system, you also need a vegetable steamer.  The Beaba is a steamer as well as a blender which is much more convenient.  However, the Bullet does come with food storage containers and the Beaba does not.

A big difference between Beaba Babycook and the Baby Bullet is the blade.  The Beaba's blade is removable which allows for a complete and thorough cleaning of all the parts.  The Bullet's blade is not removable so you can never completely clean the underside of the blades or where it is connected to the base.  I have a personal blender that I use for smoothies and like the Bullet, the blade is not removable.  Food "gunk" inevitably builds up under the blade and I do my best to scrub it with a toothbrush occasionally.  For making baby food, I feel more comfortable with the cleanliness of a removable blade.

One necessity for feeding baby is a high chair.  I personally never wanted to get a typical high chair because 1) it takes up too much space and 2) it separates the baby from family meals.  Children learn by example.  I want our children to eat with us at the table so that they are part of our meal and can learn table manners by watching us.  There are some great options available for this purpose including tray-less high chairs that pull up to a table and booster seats or space-saver high chairs that attach to a regular dining chair.

Being a military family that travels as much as we do, I considered portability as well and therefore went with the Inglesina Fast Table Chair.  It folds flat so that we can take it with us whether we eating away from home or traveling.  The couplings under the table twist securely onto tables up to 3.5" thick and the top arms won't scratch the table's surface.  It is lightweight, washable, and holds children up to 37 pounds.  We will use this chair until she graduates to a booster seat.

Welcome to the world of food, baby girl!  It's going to be an exciting culinary adventure that we can't wait to share with you!

Did you know that babies explore their world with their mouth because it is more sensitive than their fingers?  When they put something in their mouth, they learn about taste, shape, texture, and temperature.  Cameron is busy exploring her world right now.  She reaches for everything in her sight and the things that she grabs go to her mouth.  She doesn't necessarily chew gum on everything, some things are simply just touched to her mouth to learn about it.

Cameron no longer gets "stuck" on her belly - yay!  She can now easily roll and turn her body in any direction she chooses.  Her arms and legs are getting so much stronger.  She still isn't crawling but she can creep the entire way across the floor!  She moves around on her belly by pushing with her legs/feet and pulling with her arms/hands.  Cameron is a very determined little girl.  If she sees something that she wants, she will do whatever she can to reach it... and she always succeeds.  I give her plenty of uninterrupted time during the day to play and move on the open floor area in our kitchen:

I always put a few objects and toys around her just out of her reach which encourages her to move her body in order to get them.  She talks to herself and sometimes yells in frustration until she finally reaches what she's after.  Most people would help a baby trying hard to reach something.  I would have myself until I read the book Your Self-Confident Baby by Magda Gerber and learned about the RIE parenting ideas.

I encourage anyone with babies to look at the blog post, Don't Help This Baby, which contains a video of baby Ruby (the same age as Cameron is now) and her struggle/success in reaching a toy.  "Infants will astonish us with their innate abilities. The hard part is letting them.  We unwittingly train our children to be more dependent and needy than they might be by doing for them what they could be capable of doing themselves.  Yes, it’s quicker, easier and even feels more loving to hand a baby the toy she seems interested in, but by doing so, we discourage something truly precious.  What would Ruby have learned if she had been handed her toy? (Raise your hand if you wanted to hand it to her. I did!)  Or what if it had been moved right next to her?  She would have learned nothing developmentally useful except that there are more capable forces in the world – adults – who will do things for her."

I really love (most of) the RIE ideas and have been using them as a guide thus far with Cameron.  She is a happy and content baby who is developing beautifully so I know that it is really working for us.  Here are two Facebook pages that I follow and recommend that post great articles and advice on RIE parenting:  Janet Lansbury - Evaluating Childcare and Magda Gerber (RIE founder)

It's baby food making time!!  Yesterday Cameron and I walked over to the grocery store and loaded up on things to make baby food - avocados, pears, apples, bananas, peas, butternut squash, pumpkin, and organic brown rice.  Today I prepared food and froze it so that we have a supply to start eating.  I will do a separate post this coming week about all of the food prep and eating supplies/gadgets that we have because I love it all so much!

One of the things I made today was avocado puree (avocado blended with water).  One little avocado (3.5 inches long) made 8oz of creamy avocado puree.  We kept some out to eat today and froze the rest.  Last week Cameron tried some mashed avocado but pushed it all out of her mouth.  Today, she was sucking and swallowing - success!

Like last week, she wanted to feed herself today.  I figured, why not?  She can do it, she's proud of herself for doing it, and it's teaching her skills that she needs.  It doesn't matter how old she is, if she is able and willing then I will encourage it!  She gives me the spoon, I put some food on it and hand it back to her, and she puts it in her mouth and sucks the food off.  She doesn't always hit her mouth on the first try but she gets it eventually.  She had a great time eating today and I am so proud of my little independent girl!

Time for some baby-puppy love!  Dulce is a dog that craves physical affection.  When she needs some loving, she'll snuggle up right next to you to get it.  I grabbed my iPhone and discretely zoomed in to capture the shot below so I wouldn't disturb the two of them.  Dulce snuggled up against Cameron and Cam started rubbing Dulce's head and pulling at her fur, ear and collar.  Dulce was loving every minute of it and Cameron seemed to enjoy the opportunity to inspect Dulce's head up close :)

In efforts to turn our back porch into an outdoor living area, I bought an outdoor rug.  Now I can put Cameron on the ground and we can all spend a little more time in the fresh air.  Dulce and Cameron love laying on their bellies and checking out the backyard together!

Grown-ups might never know the secrets told between a baby and her dog :)

I'm not a morning person but seeing Cameron in the morning is one of my favorite things.  When she wakes up, she wiggles out of her swaddle and then happily coos, talks, and giggles to herself for a long while.  I'll always lay in bed and watch/listen on the baby monitor because it's so cute.

When I finally go into her room, I'll open the curtains to let in some light and then lean over her crib and talk to her for a few minutes.  She is non-stop HUGE smiles when she sees me in the morning.  It reminds how lucky and blessed I am to have her in my life.

There were two times this week that I woke to Cameron's usual coos and giggles over the monitor and when I went to her room, she was her usual happy smiling self...  but it was 4:30am!  She obviously thought it was morning and time to wake up.  I swaddled her a little tighter, turned her Sleep Sheep on, and thankfully she fell back asleep for a few more hours each time.  Crazy girl :)

Cameron is getting better holding her own bottle.  She grabs it out of my hands and puts it in her mouth before we even sit down.  She is also getting better at putting her pacifier in her mouth all by herself.  I really think that she simply aims for her face, hoping that it will hit her mouth, because sometimes things go up her nose or in her eye :)

Cameron is becoming mobile!  She's not technically crawling yet but she can move across the floor by wiggling her body and pushing with her feet.  She is a very determined little girl so it won't be long before she's crawling around.

Cameron will happily stay on her belly for up to 10 minutes now but still gets "stuck" and frustrated at times.  In the photo below, she started crying and Dulce came over and laid down next to her - perhaps trying to comfort her in some way?  It didn't help any but it was a sweet gesture :)  Watching the two of them together, it's obvious that Dulce respects and cares about Cameron.

This week we took Dulce to the Hickam dog beach.  It was low tide (late afternoon) and Dulce had a blast bolting around in the wet sand.  This is the first time I've been here since before Johnnie left.  Cameron seemed to enjoy the sights and sounds, looking out from her comfy sling.  It was good for all of us to get some fresh air and sunshine.

Love those chubby baby legs!

Happy Valentine's Day!  Johnnie sent me a dozen gorgeous red roses and I got to video chat with him which made for a pretty good day despite being alone :)

I had grandiose ideas for Valentine's Day baby photos but they didn't really happen.  Cameron was fussy and I didn't have time to try again.  I got a couple cute ones which is good enough for this year.

Cameron is a pro at rolling from her back to her stomach now and is getting better on her stomach every day.  She is now able to balance on one arm so that she can reach and grab things with the other. She still gets "stuck" on her stomach sometimes but she is starting to roll back onto her back more often.  Funny thing is that no matter how she rolls, she always rolls to her right.  The other day she tried hard to roll to her left and couldn't do it.  Dulce also only rolls in one direction (and probably always will) whereas I'm sure that Cameron will eventually overcome that obstacle :)

Dulce better watch out!  She is fair game for being grabbed if she gets too close :)

This week Cameron started grabbing her bottle and putting it in her mouth.  She can almost hold the bottle by herself but still needs help, especially when it's full.  She is also starting to show interest in what I eat and drink.  If I'm holding her while eating or drinking, she turns her head to follow my hand to my mouth.  One day after taking a drink from my water bottle, I held it in her reach and she grabbed it, touched it to her mouth, and then smiled at me.  She seemed so proud that she could do what mommy was doing :)

I know that Cameron isn't ready for solids yet but I thought we'd try just to see.  I got Johnnie on a video call so he could watch.  First food - avocado.  I put a tiny bit of mashed avocado on a baby spoon for her.  She did not want me putting the spoon in her mouth... she wanted to do it all by herself!  She loved gumming the spoon (no teeth yet) but I don't think she actually swallowed any of the avocado.  It all seemed to drool out of her mouth.

I'm in no rush for Cameron to start solids so we will happily wait until she is ready.  It is suggested to start solids at 6 months so Cam still has three weeks to go.  Many babies start solids before six months and some may actually be ready for it, but there are some good reasons to wait including that fact that delaying solids decreases the risk of food allergies.

I am excited to make my own baby food when Cameron is ready for it.  Homemade baby food is easy to do, saves a ton a money, and lets you know exactly what your baby is eating.  There are a lot of resources available (books and websites) for baby food making.  I recently moved the food-related pins from my Baby Stuff and Kid Stuff Pinterest boards to create a new board just for Baby and Kid Food inspiration.  I'll keep adding to it and will (eventually) share the best recipes that I find.

Valentine's 5K

Every so often there are free 5K races on Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam.  They start at the fitness center which is only a half mile from our house so I plan on running every one that I can while we live here.  This past Saturday was a Valentine's 5K.  Cameron and I put on our pink clothing and went running!

The first time I ran postpartum was when Cameron was 8 weeks old.  It felt good but it was a challenge.  I ran a Jingle Bell 5K in December and then stopped running and started the Beachbody Insanity Challenge.  Last week I started jogging again, 1.5 miles a day.  The 3.1-mile race was so EASY despite taking so much time off (7 weeks) from running!  The Insanity videos are great for toning your body and building muscle.  I've done an uncountable number of squats, lunges, and jumps for the past eight weeks with those videos so I really conditioned my legs despite not running.

Cameron has been sitting up in the Bob stroller for walks but I'm not completely comfortable running with her sitting up just yet so for this race, she was in her carseat attached with an adapter.  I will let her sit in the stroller for the race next month (she'll be six months then).

My friend Meghan ran the race with me, along with her husband and their dog.  Her husband and dog were doing circles around us the whole time and he was nice enough to slow down to take some action shots for us.

It is challenging to run with a stroller, even with my smooth riding Bob.  Swinging your arms while you run is important for energy distribution and it helps determine your stride.  If you are pushing a stroller, you can't swing your arms naturally.  You can swing one arm at a time, but that still feels really awkward to me.  When you don't swing your arms, it takes more effort and energy to push your body (and the stroller) using only your hips and legs.  I like to think that running with a stroller burns a ton more calories.  It certainly slows me down some despite my best efforts.  I'd honestly rather run without the stroller but I do love having Cameron with me and I also love having a place to put a bottle of water and my phone :)

I recently found The Running Mom blog that has some great tips about running while pregnant and running with kids.  If you're a running mama, check out her post Tips for running with the stroller.

Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam is a gorgeous military base with palm tree lined streets, sidewalks everywhere, and a running path along the water.  Being in Hawaii, the weather is just as gorgeous every day of the year... it's a runner's paradise :)

Cameron did great!  She was wide-eyed and happy the entire time - just enjoying the ride!

We finished the race in 35:15 - not bad for pushing a stroller and being five months postpartum.  By the end of the race, we both had wet shirts... mine from sweat, hers from drool :)  I'm already looking forward to the next race!
